It has been another successful season for our teams in the Northumbria Leagues.
As well as finishing 3rd in the Premiership (and finishing 1 point behind the 2nd placed team and only 6 points behind the Division winners), our Men’s 1st team won the end of season Northumbria Cup, beating the Division winners Northumberland Club in the final.
Men’s 2nd team survived in the Premiership, meaning we will again have 2 teams in the top Division next season. Men’s 3rd team won Division 2, and will move up to Division 1 next season. Also in the 2nd Division, Junior 1 finished a creditable 5th but (not help by injuries to a number of players) the Men’s 4th team were relegated.
In Division 4, Men’s 5th team were runners-up (by 2 points) and Junior 2 finished 3rd.
Men’s 6th team comfortably won Division 6, with Simon Babb (playing at number 1) winning the Player of the Division Award.
A combined Men’s 5th/6th team won the League “B” Cup – a competition for clubs with teams in the lower Divisions of the Men’s leagues.
Turning to the Ladies, this season we experimented with evenly matched 1st and 2nd teams, with the intention being that individuals would get more consistent, competitive games. This meant the teams finishing 3rd and 4th in the top Ladies Division (as Northumberland Club and Tynemouth didn’t join in with the experiment, which will be reviewed for next season). The Junior Girls team (in their 2nd season in the Leagues) showed more improvement, finishing 5th in the 2nd (middle) division.
Thanks to the team Captains for their time and efforts in fulfilling the team fixtures – Liam Gutcher, Neil Mason, Vinny Richards, Ray Ballantine, Allan Curry, Dave North, Richard and Lesley Vitty and Jude Furniss.
